In this category I include all the varying hypotheses that end up with a Norse disappearance due to the Inuit. This is the theory that has prevailed longest and extensively, having the advantage of easily responding to the patterns of the time or to accompanying ethnocentric biases: the representatives of Christian civilization were massacred by savages. Even McGovern takes his distance from this position: “The simplest model is also the oldest. Hans Egede’s contemporaries believed that the Inuit had invaded and exterminated the Scandinavian colonists.”36
